Long-term observations since 2000 by Sandra Weiss and Charlotte Eichhorn

Who we are:

Sandra Weiss, is a former diplomat and qualified political scientist who has lived in various Latin American countries over the past 25 years: El Salvador, Chile, Uruguay, Venezuela and Mexico. She now works as a freelance journalist for German and international media outlets.

Charlotte Eichhorn is a Swiss documentary filmmaker who has won numerous international awards. Her work focuses on women, environmental protection, human rights and indigenous peoples.

Charlotte Eichhorn has been following the fishermen’s plight for decades, spending several months each year in Prainha, and in 2001 won the ‘Toura d’Or’ from the German Ministry of Tourism for her television feature ‘Artisanal Fishing and Ecotourism in Prainha do Canto Verde’.

In 2006, she met Sandra Weiss in Prainha do Canto Verde.

For more than a quarter of a century, land speculators have been trying to drive the fishermen out of the Brazilian village of Prainha do Canto Verde in the north-east of the country. The community initially put up a successful defence.

They have established a state-recognised land and marine reserve, known as a RESEX,

and developed their own sustainable tourism model. Nevertheless, they ultimately failed in the face of the complex reality.
